I remember exactly where I was when the unthinkable happened. It was September 7, 2018, and I was sitting next to Emily, the founder of this magazine, watching a movie in our Boston apartment. The news hit us like a tidal wave – Mac Miller was gone from this earth. Emily and I had shared countless nights in the very same apartment bonding over our love for his music, and in that moment, we sat together in disbelief, trying to process the loss of an artist who had soundtracked so many pivotal moments for us. 

Now, almost seven years later, the announcement of his second posthumous album, "Balloonerism" reminds us that Mac is never really gone. He lives on with us through this 14-track LP, crafted around the time of "Faces." Mac fans were also treated to an accompanying short animated film to illustrate the album. 

"We believe the project showcases both the breadth of his musical talents and fearlessness as an artist. Given that unofficial versions of the album have circulated online for years and that releasing ‘Balloonerism’ was something that Malcolm frequently expressed being important to him, we felt it most appropriate to present an official version of the project to the world,” Mac Miller’s estate said. 

As we look forward to another testament to his enduring influence and legacy, I know that for me and so many others, this album is not just a release—it’s a heartfelt continuation of Mac Miller’s story and life. His artistic depth can’t be replaced, and the impact he has had on his listeners spans love, loss, depression, abuse, and even insanity.
